Es una recomendación, entre tantos y tantos blogs de viajes, hemos encontrado este Diario del Viajero que nos ha parecido interesante y útil......

Cerramos para trabajar...

Cerraremos el hotel en Enero y Febrero. Tenemos que descansar. Así que cerraremos el hotel ¡pero no este blog!!!!

Necesitamos un período de descanso y, además, tenemos que hacer algunos trabajos de acondicionamiento siguiendo las sugerencias de nuestros clientes. A lo largo del año, junto a una avalancha de opiniones positivas, de las que algunas hemos recogido aquí, también hemos recibido sugerencias, críticas, de nuestros clientes que tenemos, ahora, que intentar atender.
Cero defectos, en un proceso de mejora continua es, desde nuestro inicio aquí hace dos años y medio, el objetivo que perseguimos.

Nos han dicho, por ejemplo, que el suelo cruje en algunas habitaciones......("le parquet qui grince..." nos decía un cliente francés, D.J.) Entonces, nos hemos debatido entre la idea fundamental de no alterar las estructuras del Palacio y la evidente necesidad de hacerlo cómodo para nuestros clientes. Los suelos conservan la tarima de madera, castaño, roble, que tenía el Palacio y no la queremos cambiar. Pero, sin duda, su antiguedad hacía que crujiera en algunas zonas. Así que intentaremos resolver el problema inyectando un material aislante bajo la tarima y, además, tendremos que buscar algunas kilim antiguo que atenúe el ruido de las pisadas.

La luz. Algunos clientes nos han pedido más luz¡¡¡¡ Mónica Mastretta, por ejemplo, de Cholula, México que estuvo con su hija Mónica y con su yerno, catalán, Pascual Salvador escribía el pasado 20 de Diciembre: " Un poco más de luz en la mesita de noche para leer...."

Por cierto que regalamos a Mónica un bote de nuestra mermelada de naranjas amargas y ella, a su vez, nos prometió uno de jalea de tejocote....

Nuestro amigo, Javi Múgica, en la fiesta del cumpleaños de Josete (de Tricio, como Titín, como las "terra sigilatas" encontradas en el fondeadero romano de Asturiaga, en Hondarribia), preguntaba "¿por qué hay tan poca luz en las habitaciones de los hoteles?"

También aquí, quizás, nos habíamos pasado en nuestro intento de dar calidez, intimidad a los espacios, de evitar la luz agresiva....Habrá que buscar, con Carlos, que nos asesora en estos temas lumínicos, el equilibrio, de nuevo, entre la calidez y la iluminación suficiente. También alguno de los baños necesita, nos lo han pedido, más luz en los espejos, para el maquillaje o el afeitado.

Algún cliente nos ha sugerido también más espacio en los escritorios, llenos ahora de revistas y de la documentación del hotel.

Y hubo un ¡¡¡ error !!! en la instalación de la ducha en un baño, de modo que el grifo del agua fría la da caliente y viceversa ¡¡¡¡

Y alguna butaca más cómoda que las austeras sillas, de estilo eso sí, que tenemos en las habitaciones 102, 104, 202....

Continuaremos, por otra parte, en nuestras investigaciones históricas, para situar el Palacio en el contexto histórico de la Hondarribia (Fuenterrabía, entonces) de los siglos XVI y XVII.

Queremos hacer sentir a nuestros cliente la experiencia de alojarse en un Palacio que acogió a los emisarios del Príncipe de Condé, en el sitio de 1638, o al séquito de la Infanta Mª Teresa de Austria en las vísperas de su casamiento con Luis XIV...

¿Encontraremos el orígen del nombre "Pampinot", que tiene la calle más interesante del casco antigüo, paralela a Nagusi kalea, y de la que el Hotel ha tomado su propio nombre? Hasta ahora no hemos dado con este nombre, gascón sin duda, como tantos otros de pobladores de orígen gascón en Fuenterrabía y San Sebastián

En cualquier caso, abriremos de nuevo el Viernes, 29 de Febrero. Hasta entonces, seguiremos contando, en este blog, la marcha de nuestros trabajos

Sue & Mike (Chesterpersons) de Bergerac escribieron en TripAdvisor:

"We had visited Hondarribia previously but this was the first visit to the Hotel Pampinot. Approached by a steep, cobbled street through the only archway to the old town, the entrance of the hotel opened into the ancient, stone flagged lounge at the rear of which was another, with a winding stone stairway to the first floor. All the staff were kind and more than helpful throughout our stay, going out of their way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. A bottle of red wine in our lovely room on arrival, a chilled bottle of sparkling water on our return from dinner each evening and a bottle of champagne before we went out for New Years Eve. A lovely 'Happy New Year' note and chocolates on our return followed by copious amounts of strong coffee on New Years morning. We would certainly recommend this hotel to any traveller who enjoys comfortable, historical accommodation with the friendliest of excellent service. We will certainly return.

Change nothing. It is Spain and visitors should do as the spanish do and not expect the same food as in England"

How did you find us?

Previous visits to Parador. Now after two stays in Hotel Pampinot we can say it pleases us more than the Parador ¡¡¡¡

el viento sur ha vuelto

El viento Sur ha vuelto. Las temperaturas son, de nuevo, suaves. La mar invita a navegar. Comienzan a verse por el casco antiguo, por la Marina, los visitantes, franceses, catalanes, madrileños, ingleses...mexicanos que vienen a pasar sus vacaciones de Navidad. Aprovecharán para ir al Chillida-leku, al Museo Oteiza, en Alzuza, se alargarán hasta el Guggenheim en Bilbao, o pasarán a Sara, a Ainhoa, a Espelette... por pimientos, a Itxassou por mermelada de cerezas negras......

La relación de elogios a nuestro staff continúa interminable........

Los desayunos del Pampinot

Las naranjas amargas en el naranjo "borde"(Citrus aurantium) de la casa del Faro de Hondarribia están ya comenzando a madurar .

Este año la cosecha será inferior en cantidad a la del año pasado, que fué excepcional, pero creo que será suficiente para la elaboración de toda la mermelada que necesitemos para los desayunos del hotel. Las naranjas que cosechamos son de menor tamaño que las de Sevilla pero, por otro lado, tienen la carne más firme y la piel más fina que las sevillanas. La mermelada, a partir de nuestra propia cosecha, la elaboramos en casa con una antigüa receta inglesa.

El resto de las mermeladas que servimos en el desayuno vienen de los frutales de cultivo orgánico de la granja del Príncipe de Gales, Duchy Home Farm, que escribe sobre su filosofía:
"I wanted to demonstrate that it was possible to produce food of the highest quality, working in harmony with the environment and nature, using the best ingredients and adding value through expert production. I also wanted to engender increasing funds for my Charitable Foundation, which receives all the profits through which I can then support an increasing number of worthwhile projects."

"This is a very charming place, small and unassuming yet with a great deal of character. We visited in the off-season (early May) so the place was empty; but even at the height of tourist season it's likely a quiet getaway that's ideal for a romantic night's stay.

The hotel's staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. An unexpected surprise was a bottle of local wine with two glasses in our room on arrival. We checked out early in the morning and didn't want to stop for breakfast, but they made us coffee at their espresso bar at no charge: another very nice touch. They also gave us precise driving directions to get to Akelarre in San Sebastian for dinner, which helped immensely (not the easiest restaurant to find!). We were able to park right outside the hotel on the street in a spot reserved for hotel guests, which was very convenient.

The town itself has its own charms, and although small and not terribly exciting, Hondarribia was well worth seeking out. The city would benefit from offering a historical guide for visitors, but even without knowing much about what we saw as we strolled the streets, we enjoyed a brief visit here. The Pampinot itself has a rich history going back to the 16th century, and has been declared a historical monument.

I'm assuming that most guests in Hondarribia go there for the parador. We stopped inside but were not allowed to see more than the front desk and bar area (the rest is restricted to guests). But it's difficult for us to imagine that the parador could have been so much nicer than Pampinot to warrant the vast difference in lodging price. All told, the Hotel Pampinot is an ideal place for couples who want a quiet and cozy stay while touring the north of Spain. There are only eight rooms, so it's probably a good idea to book early during the summer months."

tras la borrasca....el sol

El temporal, ayer, fué realmente impresionante. Hoy, ya ha amaínado, el viento y la mar van bajando. Vuelve, poco a poco, la serenidad del Otoño en nuestro país. La primera foto es del amanecer de hoy, con la mar más calmada. Las siguientes son del temporal de ayer.

Días de temporal

Los inviernos son suaves en Hondarribia. Pero hay unos pocos días, como ayer, en los que se desata el temporal del Norte,ruge el viento y la mar está deshecha. Aunque sólo sea un día, tenemos que afrontar el viento, la lluvia, el frío y subir hasta el faro de Higer, desde el puerto de Refugio, pasando por el castillo de San Telmo -"el castillo de los piratas"- para contemplar el espectáculo inmenso de la mar rota, de las olas enormes que han atravesado todo el Atlántico para romperse en la playa de Ondarraitz, en Endaia, en los bajos de Erretas, en las Gemelas. Ningún balandro se ha atrevido a salir. Toda la flota pesquera está, reforzadas las amarras, fondeada. Los arrantzales chiquitean por la Marina, esperando que amaine el temporal. Nosotros, por la tarde, podríamos refugiarnos del viento y de la lluvia, a tomar el té en la paz, en la serenidad del cálido salón del Hotel Pampinot, dónde apenas romperá el silencio "Aprés la pluie" de Satie, que habrán puesto en el pickup, cuando hemos entrado, Ohiana, o Ainhoa o Mireia. Ojearemos libros de arte, los pintores del Bidasoa, Regoyos, Montes Iturrioz, Menchu Gal, Sagarzazu, Gracenea....la mejor revista de arte del mundo, FMR de Franco Maria Ricci. El té lo trajimos de Londres, de Harrods, cuando fuímos, en Junio, al Chelsea Flower Show, por ver peonías. Afuera ruge el viento y la lluvia, a rachas, barre la calle Mayor.

Pascual Maragall y Javier Sánchez Erauskin

vinieron a Hondarribia la semana pasada, para visitar la tumba del poeta José Bergamín, que vivió su último exilio en Donostia y quiso ser enterrado aquí.
Sánchez Erauskin acaba de publicar un libro sobre Bergamín o, mejor, sobre la relación y la vida de Bergamín en el País Vasco.
Maragall, amigo del poeta, que se encontraba en Bilbao, en unas Jornadas europeas, conoció, a través de Txema Montero, a Javier y le pidió que le guiará en esta visita al cementerio de Hondarribi.
El alcalde de Hondarribi, Aitor Kerejeta, nos acompañó y nos llevó a recorrer el pueblo, el puerto de refugio, la playa, el casco antigüo y, desde el tejado del Castillo de Carlos V, a contemplar las impresionantes vistas del pueblo y sus alrededores, el Jaikibel, las Peñas de Aia, el monte Larrún, la mar hasta la barra de Baiona y el faro de Biarritz.....
Finalmente Ainhoa nos acogió amablemente en el salón del Hotel Pampinot

Días de viento sur

Después de dos o tres días de mucho frío, ha vuelto el viento sur y el país, la Bahía de Txingudi, vuelve a estar encantadora, mágica.

Hace un par de días nos visitaba Pascual Maragall y el Alcalde de Hondarribia nos llevó a la terraza que corona el Castillo de Carlos V para contemplar una vista en 360 grados del país. Jaizkibel, las peñas de Aia, el Larrun, la Bahía de Txingudi....hasta el faro de Biarritz. Maragall preguntaba cuándo es la mejor época para visitar Hondarribia y yo apunté que, en mi opinión, es en Otoño, viento sur, serenidad, tranquilidad....cuando deberíamos invitar a los amigos a visitarnos.

Creo que no explicamos debidamente a Ken & Sue que, como quiera que el Palacio de Casadevante, construído en 1.536, no tiene garaje subterráneo y como quiera que la condición de Monumento Histórico-Artístico no nos permite -¡ni aunque lo permitiera¡¡¡- hacer obras que alteren su estructura, tenemos a disposición de nuestros clientes, sin cargo, 2 plazas de parking frente a la puerta principal del hotel y otras tres en la calle trasera, además de las plazas de garaje cerrado, cercano, que necesiten.
